4-5 PM ET | AWESOME CON IS A FRIENDLY SPACE FOR ALL CREATORS

The FanGrrl Gaze: Documentary As Transmedia
Over 10 years ago, I discovered the larger world of fandom and started documenting the stories of fans on video. I had hoped to capture the stories of our fandom elders for posterity, but in the process I discovered that the way I looked at the world was through The Fangrrl Gaze. Initially, I was only interested in women’s and other underrepresented voices. Dr Lynn Zubernis and I collaborated on my short Identifying As A Fangirl. The project led to the creation of Squee Projects, a creative collaborative that presents panels, makes films, film festivals and SqueeCon.But what happens when I document the creators of the work that I am fannish about? Or ask other fans about their experiences on that work? Documentaries are often seen as being objective but we know how a simple camera choice makes it subjective. This panel hopes to partially answer those questions by the screening of clips from All Hail the Popcorn King, a documentary about award winning author Joe R. Lansdale and a Q & A discussion Join us to hear more about how The Fangrrl Gaze can promote and support the work of other creators and how Squee Projects functions as a collective by asking other fans to submit videos for their documentaries.

Reimagining History and Myth for the Modern Age
Classic stories can be just as resonant for today’s audiences, from CIRCE to HAMILTON. This panel brings together four authors who are bringing history and myth to life in new novels: Hannah Whitten, whose New York Times bestselling debut FOR THE WOLF (Orbit; June 2020) blends Beauty and the Beast and Red Riding Hood into a captivating new tale; Lucy Holland, whose SISTERSONG (Redhook; October 2021) brings to life a traditional murder ballad about sisterhood and revenge; Vaishnavi Patel, who reimagines the Indian epic Ramayana from the perspective of a woman often viewed as a villain in KAIKEYI (Redhook; Spring 2022); and Rachel Gillig, who retells a classic English ballad in a new gothic fantasy, ONE DARK WINDOW (Orbit; Spring 2022).
