MAIN STAGE COSTUME CONTEST

Saturday ONLY

Costumes spanning the worlds of comics, movies, television, anime, manga, musicals, books, and games are all eligible for entry – as well as original characters inspired by these themes. Please note costumes must comply with Awesome Con’s Cosplay and Weapons Policies.

All contestants will be judged on their quality of costume and stage presence. All contestants will go on stage individually (or together if part of a group), exhibit two to three poses as our emcee reads the entrant’s costume description, and then exit. No speaking or individualization of music is allowed. ALL SATURDAY MAIN STAGE COSTUME CONTEST ENTRANTS MUST PRE-REGISTER. THERE IS NO ONSITE REGISTRATION.

The competition is split into three categories:

  • Beginner (anyone who has never won a major costume contest award)
  • Intermediate (anyone who has won between one and three major awards)
  • Advanced (anyone who has won four or more major awards)

You are welcome to compete at a higher level should you want to do so. Professional costumers may only compete at the Advanced level. If entering as a group, your category is determined by the most experienced member of your group. (Example: You have three people in your group, and two are in the Beginner category and one is in the Intermediate category. You will compete at the Intermediate level.)

Contestants must be 11 years of age or older to compete. Contestants under 11 may enter either the Saturday or Sunday Kids Costume Parade as part of Awesome Con Jr.

Best Craftsmanship and Best Portrayal will be awarded for each of the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced categories – as well as personal Judges’ Awards and one, overall Best In Show.

Any costume is eligible to compete on stage, but only costumes created by hand are eligible for Craftsmanship awards – with Craftsmanship judging taking place prior to walking on stage. If you are invited to take part in Craftsmanship judging, you will be given a time to check in, up to four hours before the contest begins, during which time our judges will meet with you to review your costume.

All contestants must arrive at the Main Stage 1 hour before our contest begins.

You may enter both the Main Stage Costume Contest and any or all of our Backlot Contests, but you must wear a different costume for each.

All Costume Contest Competitors must be Awesome Con attendees, and badges will be checked before competing.

Here are some other things to keep in mind!

  1. Don’t jump off the stage. And the audience is also not allowed to run up to the stage for any reason.
  2. No projectiles to be thrown off stage. Don’t throw anything from the stage.
  3. Please keep in mind that there will be children in the audience. Please keep your costume rating to that of a PG-13-rated film.
  4. You must be able to walk on/off stage and maneuver freely in your costume without assistance.

Main Stage Costume Contest Sign Up

You must sign-up in advance to take part in Awesome Con’s Main Stage Costume Contest.  There is no Main Stage Costume Contest registration onsite.

To sign-up, complete our online registration form by March 9. Please note, there are a limited number of spots in our Main Stage contest. We look to accommodate as many cosplayers as we can, but we can’t guarantee all applicants will be accepted to compete.  If you are competing as a group, please fill out the form once for the entire group. All applicants will hear back from us by March 19, and if you’re selected to take part, you’ll be emailed check-in information and additional contest details.

Have any questions? Please reach out to caroline@awesomecon.com.

Got it? Good! Pick up some thread, duct tape, and a hot glue gun, and we’ll see you on stage!

ULTRA DELUXE

Saturday Only

We’re taking a page out of sister shows’ book! The Costume Contest is a time-honored comic con tradition, but things are made even more exciting for both the cosplayers participating and the audience with the addition of ULTRA DELUXE Challenges! First done at Crunchyroll Expo, and then again at Anime NYC the ULTRA DELUXE element adds a whole new dimension (and a whole bunch of more prizes) to the event!

After all our costume contest entries have performed, a series of ULTRA DELUXE Challenges will be presented by special judges. Players will be selected from both the costume contest’s participants and the audience – with prizes awarded for each!

No cosplay is needed for any of the ULTRA DELUXE Challenges, and you don’t have to pre-register for them! All you have to do is show up!

The ULTRA DELUXE Challenges are separate from the costume contest with their own prizes, but they do take place after our Mainstage Costume Contest. So if you’re already competing, think of this as a bonus round to potentially win MORE prizes! Entering these challenges is entirely optional, so if you want to stick to only your walk-on or performance, that’s definitely OK!

What kind of challenges are we talking about? Part of the fun is the surprise, but some examples include:

  1. Popular Culture Trivia
  2. Re-enacting Classic Movie Tropes
  3. Mario Kart
  4. Karaoke
  5. Jenga
  6. Charades
  7. Giant Jenga
  8. Blind-Folded Giant Jenga
  9. The Aggro Crag

BACKLOT COSTUME CONTESTS

Friday, Saturday, and Sunday

You loved them last year, so they’re back and bigger! Returning to Awesome Con are daily costume contests on our Backlot Stage! The Backlot is home to everything cosplay, and our Backlot Costume Contests are the centerpieces of the Backlot’s events! More casual than Awesome Con’s Main Stage Contest, our Backlot events do not require online registration. Simply sign-up each morning of the con at the Information Booth on the Exhibit Hall Floor!

Costumes spanning the worlds of comics, movies, television, anime, manga, musicals, books, and games, are all eligible for entry – as well as original characters inspired by these themes. Please note costumes must comply with Awesome Con’s Cosplay and Weapons Policies.

All contestants will be judged based on their stage presence. All contestants will go on stage individually (or together if part of a group), strike two to three poses as our emcee reads the entrant’s costume information, and then exit. No speaking or individualization of music is allowed.

There is no craftsmanship judging as part of our Backlot Contests, nor are there distinct Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced divisions. Instead, our Backlot events are designed to give newer cosplayers a chance to show their skills onstage without the rigors associated with our Main Stage event.

Contestants must be 11 years of age or older to compete. Contestants under 11 may enter the Saturday or Sunday Kids Costume Parade as part of Awesome Con Jr.

First, Second, and Third Place will be awarded based upon audience applause; Judges’ Awards will also be presented.

Any costume is eligible to compete in our Backlot Contests, not necessarily having to be made by hand, and you may enter both the Main Stage Costume Contest and any and all of our Backlot Contests, but you must wear a different costume for each.

All Costume Contest Competitors must be Awesome Con attendees, and badges will be checked before competing.
